Belize District

With an area of 1633 square miles, Belize District is a district of the nation of Belize. Belize District is on the central coastline of Belize, and is the heart of the country. Most of the Belize District is in the east central mainland of Belize with the majority of the population located in two urban areas. These 2 urban areas include Belize City, which is the larger of the two, and San Pedro Town. Belize City has an estimated population of 60,800, whereas San Pedro Town has a population of 8,900. The remaining population of all the villages and remote communities combined is about 17,800 people. Belize City was the first capital of the colony of British Honduras. Most of the country's commerce and trade is centralized here. The residents of the Belize District are mostly Creole descendants of African slaves and European settlers. When the Europeans settled in the Belize District, they began to develop estates along the rivers and creeks. In doing so, it enabled them to create waterways which were their transportation highways. The landscape in the Belize District varies from costal swamp to savannah inland and passes through many rivers and lagoons, hence, the reason why the trade became a huge success.
